One of the major factors determining when we go to Ireland is Doug's ability to get time off of work. Up until this year, he received 2 weeks paid vacation at the beginning of each year. This year, however, they switched over to an earn-as-you-go system. This means his first week's vacation is not available until June and his second week comes to him at the end of the year. It does roll over, but in order to have two weeks available he is skipping one week of vacation this year, allowing that week to roll over and then not taking any vacation until June of next year.
Unfortunately, this mean two things. One, Doug won't really have two weeks vacation time saved up by next May, which is our first choice of when to go to Ireland. That's why, if we really want to go in May, we might need to wait a whole year longer in order to accumulate enough vacation time to take two weeks off in the month of May. Two, if we want to continue to have two weeks saved up for Ireland, he doesn't go to Family Camp next year. Ugh.
Skipping FC next year would give him enough vacation time to go next September. The thing is, the only year since the late 80's that Doug hasn't been to Camp is the year he was out of work for 10 months. Missing FC is a major life disaster around here.
Thus we have our "when to go" dilemma. There is a slight possibility that we could finagle his personal days and what vacation time he will have accumulated in order go this coming May. It would definitely mean Doug missing Camp, though. Otherwise, we most likely will be waiting until May 2012 because September just doesn't sound as appealing to us, when we look over our "pro's & con's" lists.
2012. Sheesh, that sounds like a long way off! I'm still scheming, but now you see our dilemma. Apparently, we definitely don't lead a, "run off to Paris for the weekend" kind of lifestyle! :)
